Tyler Jenkins Receives ASC Honors

2018 Jan 18

The McMurry University baseball team had a pair of its team members and former Big Country prep athletes selected to the American Southwest Conference baseball pre-season watch list.

Tyler Jenkins of Abilene, TX has been selected to the American Southwest Conference 2018 pre-season "watch list," it was announced by the conference office.

Jenkins completed his third season in the McM program in 2017 and was one of just two team members to appear in every contest last year, earning second team All-ASC accolades. He has been a starter for the War Hawks since his sophomore campaign.

Jenkins led McMurry in several offensive categories, including: batting average (.317), hits (44), at-bats (139), home runs (7) and runs batted in (27). He was also among the club's top defensive players with a .977 fielding average in 44 chances. He also had a team-best two saves from the mound.

Jenkins collected the War Hawks' top numbers in multiple hit games (12) and multi-RBI games (5). He also shared the longest hitting streak in 2017, with eight consecutive games. Jenkins also had a skein of 15-straight games reaching base safely during 2017.

Poe, entering his second full season with McM in 2018 (after an injury shortened season in 2016), had 45 strikeouts to just 33 walks in 2017. The righty threw 50.2 innings and had a 5.33 earned run average. He shared the team lead with 15 appearances and made 10 starts on the hill.

Opponents had a .263 batting average against Poe. He finished 2017 with a 3-6 mark.

The McM team was tabbed in the No. 9 position, along with Louisiana College, in the pre-season poll. Defending champion UT-Tyler was the favorite to once again win the ASC crown.

The War Hawks open their 2018 season on February 9 with a non-conference road game at Schreiner University. McMurry's home opener is slated for February 16 (3 p.m.) against Southwestern University.
