Tiyoshi Hopes Earns NCCAA National Honor

2018 Mar 27

Tiyoshi Hopes of Abilene, TX has earned an NCCAA National Honor.

In its first meet of the 2018 outdoor track and field season, the McMurry University program earned a pair of national weekly honors from the National Christian College Athletic Association. The War Hawks had junior women's thrower Bethany Everett (Stratford, Texas) and sophomore men's jumper Tiyoshi Hopes (Abilene, Texas) both recognized as the NCCAA's field events "Student-Athletes of the Week" in their respective divisions.

Hopes won both the high jump and long jump at McMurry's "War Hawks Classic". In the high jump, Hopes broke the 15-year old school record (formerly held by Ryder Peacock), clearing 7-00.25 and became just the second person in school history to clear the seven-foot mark. His mark leads the NCAA III South/Southeast Region (and all of NCAA III), as well as topping the NCCAA rankings.

Hopes leaped 23-06 in winning the long jump. That mark also is both the NCAA III national - as well as South/Southeast Region - leading long jump effort. He ranks No. 3 in the NCCAA's long jump national list.

Everett placed fourth in the hammer throw at War Hawks Classic, finishing behind three NCAA DI competitors. The junior had a throw of 49.55 meters, which is the best mark in the NCCAA this season by more than four meters. She also tops the NCAA III South/Southeast Region (and No. 5 in NCAA III competitors).

Everett also finished in sixth in the discus throw with a mark of 39.65 meters, the third best distance in the NCCAA this season.
