Shenikqua Stewart Recognized at National Model UN Conference

2017 Apr 4

Shenikqua Stewart of Abilene, TX was a part of the McMurry University Model UN Team recognized at the national Model UN Conference in New York City.

Representing the diplomatic delegation of Kyrgyzstan, the Model UN team was rewarded for their conference preparation for a committee Position Paper Award crafted by Tony Phan, a sophomore political science major.

Model UN faculty sponsor Dr. Joel Olufowote stresses how difficult earning recognition at the New York conference can be, especially for smaller schools with smaller delegations.

"Position paper excellence is awarded to a maximum of three papers out of committee sizes with as many as 150 competing papers. The odds of winning a position paper award, particularly in a General Assembly committee where we did, is extremely difficult, especially when only 2% of participants in that committee has a shot," said Olufowote. "We were selected as one of the recognized 2% for conference preparation and given the international and domestic competition present at the conference, I cannot be any more proud of the group!"
