Jordyn Burnell Receives American Southwest Conference Honor

McMurry University scholar-athlete Jordyn Burnell of Sinton, TX received American Southwest Conference honors.

Five McMurry University scholar-athletes were among the 68 American Southwest Conference competitors named to the league's Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams for fall 2017. The ASC academic accolades are selected from the sports of women's and men's cross country, football, women's and men's soccer and volleyball.

Recognized from the War Hawks' programs were: Tyler Rohrman (Waller, Texas) for men's cross country; Kylie Fonville (Azle, Texas) for women's cross country; Jamir Bowser (Austin, Texas) for football; Javi Mejia (Azle, Texas) for men's soccer, and; Jordyn Burnell (Sinton, Texas) for volleyball.

Rohrman, a sophomore biomedical science major, earned first team All-ASC after placing 7th at the ASc championships and was an ASC Runner of the Week once (9/25/17). Rohrman was McM's top finisher in six-of-seven races and finished 2017 with four-consecutive 8K races with sub-28:00 minute times. He placed 25th at National Christion College Athletic Association (NCCAA) meet and was also a second team All-ASC finisher in 2016.

Fonville, a sophomore theater education major, was 19th at the ASC championships. She had three top-20 race finishes, overall. Fonville finished 70th at NCCAA meet.

Bowser, a senior defensive lineman, picked up his second-consecutive ASC Distinguished Scholar honor. Bowser was also a two-time ASC All-Academic honoree. In 2017, Bowser started all 10 games on McM's defensive line, amassing 33 total tackles (19 solo), 7.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks.

Mejia, a sophomore, played and started all 17 matches for the War Hawks in 2017. Mejia scored three goal and had one assists. He took 32 shots, with 20 directly on-goal. Among his season highlights, Mejia scored the game-winning goal versus nationally-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Burnell, a sophomore, was a second team All-ASC West Division and second team All-NCCAA Central Region selection in having a break-out campaign in 2017. Burnell led the War Hawks in attack attempts (876) and was responsible for an average of 3.06 points per set for her team. Burnell registered double-digit kill totals in 18 matches this season, with a season-high of 17 kills versus Schreiner University. She also had five aces in a game (versus Dallas Christian). Burnell was also outstanding in the back row with an average of 2.97 digs per set. Burnell had 19 matches with double-figure digs, twice booking 24 digs in a match (versus East Texas Baptist and Howard Payne).

The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams recognizes student-athletes who achieve a high level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list - limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport - the sports information directors from the 13 ASC member institutions and two affiliate members select a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each sport.
