Jordyn Burnell Receives American Southwest Conference Honor

2017 Nov 20

Jordyn Burnell of Sinton, TX is a member of the McMurry War Hawk volleyball team that claims NCCAA Central Region Crown.

For the third time in its history, the McMurry University volleyball team has claimed the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Region championship - and will advance to the national tournament - after defeating Southwestern Assemblies of God, 3-1, at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks (23-7) won by set scores of 22-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-20, over the Lady Lions (27-7).

Additionally, the victory had double significance for McM in that it was also career coaching victory number 400 for War Hawks' head coach Cammie Petree in her 22 seasons at the McM helm. Petree has a .610 winning percentage in her three separate stints at the McM helm, with a record of 400-256.

Against No. 1 -seed SAGU, McMurry out-hit the Lady Lions .243 to .172 on the attack. McM had nine total blocks, compared to seven for SAGU.

The War Hawks had a quartet of players in double-figure kills, led by 12 from sophomore Justice McGowan. McGowan had a .379 attack average, making just one error in 29 attempts. She also made three blocks and six digs.

Khristyn Howard and Jasmine Jones each had 11 kills and two blocks to their credit. Setter Emarie James had 10 kills, to go along with her 22 assists and nine digs. Fellow setter Lauryn Davis had 27 assists and 12 digs.

Christian Brown led the back row players with 19 digs. Junior libero Odalis Rodriguez chipped in 16 digs and Jordyn Burnell 12.

Jaelyn Green served up three of the War Hawks' four aces in the match.

McMurry also claimed NCCAA Central Region banners in 2012 - when it won the national title - and again in 2013, earning a regional playoff berth all six seasons of the school's association. 2017 will be the War Hawks' fourth trip to national finals in Kissimmee, Florida, having also received an at-large bid in 2014.
