2017 Nov 27

Heidy Alvarez Mendoza of Los Angeles, CA Earns Women's Soccer Team Sportsmanship Award.

McMurry University is one of eight American Southwest Conference member institutions, which were recognized by the 13 conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committees as a recipient of an ASC-SAAC Team Sportsmanship awards for the fall 2017 sport seasons. The War Hawks' women's soccer team was presented with the ASC's Team Sportsmanship honor for the second-consecutive season and third time in its history (also winning in 2011).

The SAAC Team Sportsmanship award honors the member institution in each ASC championship sport that best displays positive qualities of sportsmanship and fair play from its student-athletes, coaches and fans throughout the season. The fall 2017 awards are presented in men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball with each of the 13 campus SAACs voting within the sports it sponsors.

"We are extremely humbled and honored to be recognized with this award," McM head coach Charles Nobles said. "We play in a conference that has fantastic coaches players - and even better people - and it's amazing to hear our peers think of us in this way. We want to develop 'Champions for Life' at McMurry and we place a huge emphasis on doing the right thing, both on and off the field. Our mission is to help our athletes make the world a better place and sportsmanship, along with the way you treat people, is a huge component of that."

The ASC-SAAC Team Sportsmanship award is presented for the 11th year during the 2017-18 sport seasons. The winter sports award will be announced following completion of the men's and women's basketball championships.
