Candace Boehm Recognized at Regional Social Sciences Meeting

Candace Boehm of Hot Springs was recognized for work presented at the recent Southwestern Social Science Association meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada.

McMurry sociology professor Dr. Robert Wallace and sociology major Paxton Grayer II '16 presented a paper, "Tunnel Vision: The Social Psychology of Wrongful Convictions" which was recognized as the outstanding sociology paper presented at the conference.

Candace Evans '16 reported on findings from her honors thesis in a paper, "Beyond the Scale: The Importance of Considering Race and Ethnicity in Examining the Relationship Between Body Image and Self-Esteem." Her work also received an award for the being the best sociology undergraduate student paper.

Brianna Brown '16 presented data from her honors thesis in a paper, "Out-Group Colorism: Does Skin Tone Matter for Different Racial Groups?"

Samantha Derden '15, who graduated last year from McMurry's Honors Program, presented information from her honors thesis in a paper, "Falsely Accused: Gender and Age Effects."

McMurry sociology professor Dr. Jori Sechrist, Brianna Brown and Dr. Renelinda Bressler, assistant professor at Our Lady of the Lake University, presented a paper, "The Ideal Shade: Skin Tone Ideals in Caucasian, African American, and Latino College Students."

Dr. Sechrist chaired two sessions, "Body and Race" and "Marriage and Family." Dr. Wallace chaired two sessions, "Sociology of Economics" and "Crime, Law, and Deviance II." He also finished up a two-year appointment on the Executive Committee of Southwestern Sociological Association.
