Adrienne Nairn a Member of First McMurry War Hawk Women's Softtball Team

2018 Jan 3

Adrienne Nairn of Frisco, TX is a member of the first McMurry War Hawk women's softball team.

McMurry University softball head coach David McNally - guiding the program toward its inaugural season in 2018 - has announced the first-ever player roster in school history. The charter group will be comprised of 21 players.

"I am very excited - and honored - to be guiding this group of young women," McNally said. "I think people may be somewhat surprised when they watch us; I don't think we will be your usual 'start-up' type of a program, where the expectations aren't very high. We are blessed with some very talented players, many of whom already have some college experience under their belt.

"Our team mantra is to be competitive right out of the blocks and set a championship tone from the beginning. We want War Hawks Softball to be known for doing things the right way on the field, in the community and in the classroom."

McNally - who has spent nearly a year assembling his squad - will have a somewhat atypical roster than would many first-year programs made up mostly of first-year player. McNally's team will have no less than nine transfers with collegiate experience, complimented by a talented core of 12 freshmen. Among the transfers there is a good disparity in terms of eligibility, with five juniors and four sophomores.

As to positions, McNally has four pitchers and two catchers (as well as a third player who is capable of handling duties behind the plate as a second position). He has seven outfielders and eight players slated at infield spots.

All 21 players hail from the state of Texas. Other demographics of the team include: six left-handed batters; no left handed throwers; seven players from "Big Country" area high schools; and three which call Lubbock, Texas home. No less than eight of McNally's players bring all-state pedigrees as prep players. However, McNally may have a few of his players struggle to get on rides at Disneyland, with 10 team members checking in at 5'3" or under!

The first official day of practice in the spring for McMurry will be on January 15. The first game will be at home on February 2 (3 p.m.) versus Trinity University (2018 home games will be played at Abilene's Red Bud Park).
